Black boy, Black boy by D. L. Washington
Black boy, black boy
Have you heard the news?
I have but I won’t watch the videos
I refuse.
Black boy, black boy
You need to know about the drama
I read the news, that’s enough trauma.
Black boy, black boy
What do you see?
I see racism against people like me.
Black boy, black boy
This couldn’t happen to you
My black skin to them outweighs my education and anything I do.
Black boy, black boy
Where are your tears?
Which ones I have cried so many over the years?
Black boy, black boy
What do you mean?
The news tell us about a different person
But it is the same scene.
Black boy, black boy
What’s your deal?
I have seen this before
Like with Emmett Till.
Black boy, black boy
Post a status and start a conversation
Honestly, I am too tired and need time to lament for this nation.
Black boy, black boy
Why are you not in deep despair?
Because I know the Lord and He is always there
Black boy, black boy
How have you not gone insane?
Because I know my prayers are not in vain.
Black boy, black boy
How can you sing?
Because God gave my people songs to endure any horrific thing.
Black boy, black boy
How have your people gotten through the days?
We sung and believed “Trouble won’t last always”
(Fast-Forward)
Daddy, daddy
What did they see? ( in an alarmed tone)
They saw a threat, but they didn’t see me.
Baby, baby
What does God see?
He sees a black, beautiful image bearer in me.

Beautiful, and I’m so sorry for the racism so prevalent in these times… persevere my brother.. your rewards in glory will be marvelous!

Beautiful words. Thank you for sharing your opinions during this time. I have also found it tiring to continue to speak against such obvious hatred. Your poem has encouraged me to grieve properly the significant loss I feel for these American deaths. Praising God for your life and praying there will be a day soon where you no longer have to live in fear in so many ways.
